Reliability Engineering & the Bible
The Origin of Failure Laws and Need for Maintenance and Reliability Design. Jim Hovis is semi-retired but still teaching high school Chemistry, Physics, and Computer science at Victory Christian School. His career began in Physics LASER Research and Development at Westinghouse Defense Center, and then he moved into Reliability Engineering in the Aerospace Military defense industry at Westinghouse, Allison Jet Engine, and Honeywell Aerospace in Albuquerque. He also worked at Hewlett Packard Medical Diagnostics as a field service engineer and Ford Motor Co. as a Reliability Design Engineer in the Powertrain Division. His presentation will discuss the on-going controversy on the Second Law of Thermodynamics (Entropy) and how Reliability Engineering deals with the consequence of the effects of the Genesis Fall (and the Second Law).
Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
God's Magnificent Creation
The Earth, part 3
By Art Córdoba
Finally, consider water, that marvelous substance that has so many extraordinary characteristics and without which life, as we know it, would not be possible. As we shall see God, in His infinite wisdom and power created water, truly an exceedingly remarkable substance. We tend to take water for granted, I think, because we have so much of it, and because it is so much a part of our daily life. It is one of the most prevalent substances on earth. In its liquid state water is clear, odorless, and tasteless. Water is absolutely essential for life to exist. If we were deprived of water for just a few days we would die. The human body is made up of about 65% water, In addition to slacking our thirst it performs a number of other bodily functions. It dissolves oxygen and other minerals essential for life.
It flushes away waste products from our body and transports essential nutrients throughout the body wherever they may be needed. No other substance has these marvelous properties.Water is not only found in the earth's oceans, lakes, and rivers, but also just about everywhere else. Compared to the broad plains of Mars and the rocky deserts of the moon, and the craters of Mercury, the Sahara desert is like a wet sponge. Water is found all over the earth; dispersed by clouds, water manages to be everywhere. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows, and sometimes water falls upon the earth in other forms, but even where rain is sparse as in the earth's deserts, there is a nightly dew that provides a sufficient amount of moisture for the creatures that inhabit these seemingly dehydrated parts of the earth's surface to not only survive but to flourish. The oceans, unique to our earth, cover 71% of its surface. The fact that this huge amount of water is here in liquid form cannot be dismissed off-hand.
The oceans act as tremendous heat sinks - their total volume being 1,370,000,000 cubic km (328,091,794 cubic miles). For this reason they have an extremely moderating effect on climate. Islands in the gulf stream enjoy a mild oceanic climate even at a latitude of 62° N, while certain parts of Siberia at the same latitude are subject to a severe continental climate; e.g. the temperature on the Faroe Islands (between Great Britain and Iceland) varies between 3.2° C (37.76° F) in January to 10.6° C (51.08° F) in July, while it ranges from -43.5° C (-46.3° F) in January to 19.0° C (66.2° F) in July at Yakutsk, Russia. Most of the matter that makes up the mass of the heavenly bodies in the universe consists of hot gasses, as in the stars.
It is theorized that there may be water on other planets in the solar system but if there is water on any of these planets it is presumably deeply frozen below the surface. Only the earth, of all the heavenly bodies in the solar system, has such a great abundance of liquid water. If the earth had less water, temperature changes would be considerably greater and living conditions would be harsher. Additionally the waterways of the world are an important and essential source of food. The total quantity of water on the earth as we have seen amounts to 1,370,000,000 cubic km. This water is continually being cycled to and from the oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and ground water. The total amount of water vapor in the atmosphere has been calculated to be about 13,000 cubic km, which is less than one hundred thousandth of the total quantity of water making up the earth, but it is still of crucial importance for climatic reasons and by extension for living organisms. If all of this atmospheric water were spread evenly over the surface of the earth (510,000,000 km2), the earth would be covered to a depth of just about one inch.
Considering that the mean annual world precipitation is about 39 inches, it means that the water vapor in the atmosphere must, as a whole, be exchanged at least forty times a year. At temperate and circumpolar latitudes the precipitation is much greater than the average, and this comprises an appreciable portion of the global heat transfer cycles. The major ocean currents like the Gulf Stream, which transports warm water northwards, and the Humboldt Current (cold water), also carry large amounts of heat. In addition the continuous evaporation of water from the oceans, aided by the trade and other winds blowing over thousands of km, irrigates the continents, which would otherwise be desiccated. The water cycle enables life to exist on the earth, which would not have been possible without what we call "weather." To be continued next month . . .
Something To Think About
Anne Graham Lotz, Billy Graham's daughter, was interviewed on the Early Show September 13th, 2001. She stated, "I believe God also knows what it is like to lose a loved one. He gave his only son on a cross. He knows what it is like to see a loved one die a horrific death. He's emotionally involved in our pain and he has the answers for us and he can bring comfort beyond human understanding."
After, there was the following anonymous commentary. In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. Let's see I think it started when Madeline Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body was found recently) complained she didn't want any prayer in our schools, and we said OK.
Then, someone said you better not read the Bible in school... the Bible that says "thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal", and "love your neighbor as yourself." And we said, OK. Then, Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide) And we said, an expert should know what he's talking about so we said OK.
Then, someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued (there's big difference between disciplining and touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc.) And we said, OK.
Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said, OK. Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want, so they can have all the "safe sex" that they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. And we said, OK.
Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. And agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good. And then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome, down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body. And we said, OK.
And then someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then stepped further still by making them available on the internet. And we said OK, they're entitled to their free speech. And then the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. And let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, and nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW." "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." -Galatians 6:7
"Dear God, Why didn't you save the little girl killed in her classroom? " Sincerely, Concerned Student...Could the reply be: "Dear Concerned Student, I am not allowed in schools." Sincerely, God. Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to Hell (literally). Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what God says in the Bible.
Funny how everyone wants to go to heaven, provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do anything the Bible says. Funny how someone can say "I believe in God" but still follow Satan who, by the way, also "believes" in God. Funny how we are quick to judge, but not to be judged. Funny how you can send a thousand 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how the lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but the public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace. Funny how someone can be so fired up for Christ on Sunday, but be an invisible Christian the rest of the week. Funny how I can be more worried about what other people think of me than what God thinks of me.
