The Conclusion to God's Magnificent Creation - The Earth, part 5
By Art Córdoba

Water also has a very high specific evaporation value, much higher than most other substances. Because of water's high specific evaporation value it also enhances life on the earth. This characteristic is defined as the amount of heat, below the boiling point of [e.g.] water needed to convert 1 g of the substance into a gas without raising its temperature. Vaporization of a liquid takes place at the boiling point of the liquid but at temperatures below the boiling point of the liquid single molecules begin to escape from the liquid as a gas. This process is called evaporation.

Because heat is used in evaporation the liquid cools down. This characteristic deters the ground from drying out. As condensation heat, it forms the main source of heat in the higher geographical latitudes. The transportation of condensation, which comes from the sub-tropics to higher latitudes in atmospheric circulation, also presents a great transportation of heat that is set free in the clouds in the process of condensation. This effect contributes considerably to the moderation of the temperature fluctuation between the poles and the equator. Living beings also use this high vaporization heat to regulate their body temperature since much surplus heat can be emitted by the loss of a small amount of fluid.

Water exists in three states: liquid, solid, and gas. For molecules to react together they have to remain in close proximity to each other and yet be free to move around. This is just the condition water provides in the liquid state. Thus water is the ideal medium to participate in the many different chemical reactions that take place in the human body. Water (or any other substance) when broken down to its smallest constituent state is called a molecule. The water molecule is made up of two basic elements, two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. The chemical term for water is H2O. Chemically these atoms are "connected" in a V shape with an angle of 104º.

The hydrogen atoms have a positive charge while the oxygen atom has a negative charge. It is because of this polarization that water is able to dissolve so many things. It comes close to being a "universal solvent," but if it were a true universal solvent no container would be able store it. Because of its ability to do this, among other things, it allows aquatic life to use oxygen, a necessary component for virtually all forms of life. Additionally the force that binds the atoms together accounts for the "surface tension" of water. Surface tension is defined as a force that tries to keep the surface area as small as possible. One can see this if he fills a glass with water and then very carefully adds water to the filled glass. It will be noted that the water does not immediately overflow but holds its shape at the rim of the glass. Eventually adding more water will cause the surface tension to break and the water overflows. This is also why bubbles and water drops are spherical in shape. Another way to see surface tension in water is to watch certain insects "walk" on the surface of water. Recent research seems to indicate that there are two types of hydrogen bonds that occur in the water molecule. One of these bonds is about twice as strong as the other. This could explain why water remains in the liquid state over such a wide range. Summary:

We have only mentioned a few of the many conditions that God in His loving grace fashioned when He created the earth not only for humans but for the myriad other life forms that inhabit the planet. If even a few of the parameters we have discussed were changed ever so slightly life would not be able to exist on the earth. Only a few of the many aspects of creation have been mentioned. Every one of the aspects of God's creation, be they geophysical, mechanical, or thermal, were mutually and wonderfully intertwined, making planet earth ideally suitable for life to exist. An unbiased observer could come to only one conclusion; this had to be the result of intelligent design. It follows naturally that where there is intelligent design there had to be an intelligent designer.

We take for granted, the earth's wonderful suitability for life when we compare it with the other planets in our solar system Our solar system contains striking counter examples of all the favorable conditions prevailing on the earth. In the past few years man has been feverishly "exploring" the heavens with the goal of finding life elsewhere in the universe. They even look for it in such inhospitable places as the solar planets themselves. Surely God is telling us something important when the Bible says, "In the beginning He created the heavens and the earth." Can anyone doubt the work of a Creator when we look at how skillfully, how carefully, the earth was crafted? The psalmist speaks of this when he says, "How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures" (PSA 104:24).

God asked Job, and by extension us, some interesting questions regarding His creation when He said, "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?" (JOB 38:4-5) As wonderful as the earth still is today, imagine what it was like in the beginning when God finished His creative work. GEN 1:31 states: "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good ...."

New Book on Church History
by CSF Author Kent Powderly

It is no shock that there are many disturbing events and eras in the history of Christianity - the present day rejection of Bible truth not the least of them. A recent Barna Research Group Poll concluded that while 77% of Americans call themselves Christians, only 5% of them meet the Bible-based criteria presented below. This is down from 12% ten years ago. Most believers agreed with the first two statements but rejected the other six - especially criterion number 3.

1. A personal commitment to Jesus Christ in their life.
2. They believe they will go to heaven after death because they confessed their sins and accepted Jesus Christ as Savior.
3. They believe that the Bible is totally accurate in what it teaches (including Genesis 1-11).
4. They believe that they are responsible to share their faith with non-believers.
5. They believe that Satan exists.
6. They believe that salvation is possible only through grace and not by works.
7. They believe that Jesus lived a sinless life on earth.
8. They describe God as the all-knowing, all-powerful, perfect deity who created and rules the universe.

How did so many Christian churches lose touch with the foundations of their own faith? When did it all begin? What can we do about it now? Some of the answers may surprise you. A newly released book, One Faith - Many Transitions, by local CSF author K.G. Powderly Jr. reviews church history with a "world-view approach" that takes the Genesis foundations of our faith seriously. "One Faith¼" shows the historically disastrous consequences of Christians allowing the idea that "death preceded the Genesis Fall" to take root in their theology. It has special appeal to Creationists because it deals not only with Christian history in general, but with the specific ideas, people and events that led to the disintegration of trust in Genesis (and the Bible in general) as a historical book. The process started much earlier than most people think.

One Faith - Many Transitions is the first church history book to give modern Creationism the attention it deserves as a major movement to restore biblical integrity to the Christian faith. It delves into how the Greek world-view began to distort Christianity in the 2nd century and how the subsequent medieval church often built on those distortions. It also shows the crucial role Christianity played in the rise of modern science and how science was later "evangelized" by the philosophy of Materialism long before Darwin. It unveils the faith foundations of evolution as a religion. In addition, One Faith - Many Transitions gives a compelling alternative biblical world-view for the 21st century while it traces the rise of the current "Post-Modernism" that denies divine moral absolutes.

Christians today need to have a working understanding of their own history and the world-view issues they face - all from a biblical perspective. Written to communicate "grace seasoned with salt," One Faith - Many Transitions walks the believer through the disturbing aspects of church history in a way that will build up the reader's faith and give them confidence in God's word and his work in the churches of both the past and present. One Faith - Many Transitions will be available at the book table or for on-line ordering at iuniverse.com book store. (Or, for $6.00 as an e-book from iuniverse.com.) It will soon be released at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and booksamillion well before Christmas.

The Battle for a Cosmic Center

Dr. Russ Humphreys was featured in the August 2002 ICR publication, Impact. It is article, #352. His topic was The Battle for a Cosmic Center. In the Bible God tells us that man is the center of His attention. He created earth on day one and worked with it for two more days before He created the sun, moon, and stars on day four. It was our planet that caused the whole of creation to groan (Rom 8:22). Our Creator came to our planet (John 1:9,10) to die for our sins. His eternal throne will be on a renewed earth (Rev 21:2,3). Man is very special to God.

Secular cosmologies, however, try to place us in an irrelevant position. With the Big Bang theory there is no center. The Starlight and Time video helps to visualize this.

The Hubble Law states that redshifts tend to be proportional to distance. Over the past few decades astronomers have noted these red shifts are quantized - in distinct, evenly-spaced groups. Thus galaxies are, perhaps, expanding in evenly spaced spherical shells around our Milky Way Galaxy. The big bang theory can't tolerate a center. Quantized redshifts are evidence both against the big bang cosmology and for putting our galaxy very near the center of the universe. Dr. Hupmhreys will be discussing the implications of these quantized redshifts in a forthcoming technical journal article which will be available on the ICR website, icr.org. And while you're there, check out Impact Article #352, Nuclear Decay: Evidence for a Young World, also by Russ, along with many more articles by himself and by Dr. John Baumgardner.
